Who We Are

That word “who” is important because the church is a community of faith not a place or a building. Mt Signal Baptist Church was established in May of 1941 by 24 people who saw the need for a church gathering that was more accessible to local residents.

The name “Mt Signal” was inspired from the nearby mountain, Signal Point, where a lamp was lit each night to welcome and guide early settlers. The hope for this church was that it would “signal” to all people to come to faith in Christ.

In the summer of 2023, Mt Signal Baptist Church began a revitalization process as several Chelsea, AL families joined with existing members and appointed a new teaching pastor.

Our hope is still the same as it’s always been. We want people in and around Chelsea, AL to know and become more like Jesus. We want to know and become more like Jesus too as we worship God, love another, and proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ!

Our Vision

To become more like Jesus

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
– Philippians 3:8-11

Paul’s words to the Philippians about knowing and becoming like Jesus is the primary Scripture from which we draw our vision. The vision to know and become like Jesus is found throughout the New Testament and should be the goal for everyone who has faith in Him. We recognize and embrace the reality that in order to become like Jesus we must rely on Him in faith and deny ourselves, even sharing in suffering as we are criticized or persecuted by those who do not hold faith in Him.

Our Mission

We worship God, love one another, and proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
– Romans 12:1
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
– John 13:34-35
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
– Matthew 28:19-20
Our mission as a church is simple and is drawn primarily from these three Biblical texts. We believe our mission as a church is consistent with the entire teaching of Scripture and aligns with the mission of the global church for all time.

When we worship God with our entire lives, we become like Jesus as we focus our attention and affection on Him. When we love another we become like Jesus because we love who He loves. We also recognize that in order to love God we must love another (1 John 4:20-21). Finally, in proclaiming the gospel we become like Jesus by joining in His mission to seek and save the lost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What music style(s) do you use to worship through singing on Sunday mornings?

We value authenticity, simplicity, reproducibility, and biblical faithfulness when we sing together. As for style, we love any song (old or new) that meets those criteria, exalts the Lord and encourages one another.

We don’t focus on the entertainment value of how we sing together nor do we lean towards any specific preference. We have some talented musicians who are part of our church that lead us in worshiping through singing songs from the Baptist Hymnal as well as some modern hymns played in a more modern style.

As we revitalize the church in general, we are working to “find our rhythm” in singing together so from week to week our style is changing and we are experimenting with different arrangements, different song selections, and different instruments.

How are you ministering to the next generation (Nursery, Preschool, Children, Students)?
We have a fully equipped nursery and care for infants and very young children.

Currently we have a Children’s Worship service that runs parallel to the “preaching” time in the “Grown Up” service. We’re all together beginning at 10:45. We pray and sing together but then the kids (elementary and middle school) are dismissed around 11:15.

The activities and teaching they receive align with the sermons their parents hear. We did this intentionally so that families can have intentional discipleship conversations after the service (hopefully around lunch but even in the car as they leave).

As for students… again, we’re building. We have a few high school and college age students and we are at the ground floor of building a student ministry that will meet on Wednesday nights.

As we grow, our plan is to introduce an educational and discipleship hour prior to the 10:45 service. We are in the process of equipping workers and developing a ministry to the next generation that will better equip parents to disciple their children.

How long are your Sunday morning services?

Our main worship gathering starts at 10:45 and usually lasts about an hour and fifteen minutes. It’s rare for us to dismiss after 12:00.
